&Mdash; Skilled rip currents and 3- to 5-foot waves are expected for today's tournament that will require up to 50 South Florida lifeguards to paddle their surf boards twice around the 1,000-foot-hanker Juno Beach Pier.

"An inexperienced person should never do this. But experienced lifeguards skilled in how to ride rip currents safely. They use the currents to their advantage," said Rob Rogerson, training police officer for Palm Beach County Ocean Rescue.

Two Palm Strand County Ocean Rescue lifeguards, Capt. Julia Leo and lifefuard Brian Bowen, won last year's affair. They plan to defend their titles at Tuesday's competition.

The male and female contestants, who must be lifeguards registered with the Pooled States Lifesaving Association, plan to start on their 10-foot-large boards at the foot of the pier about 1 mile north of Donald Ross Procedure. Lifeguards will be required to paddle out past the pier and then return to the beach on the other side.

The lifeguards then must run a 100-yard obviously along the beach, carrying their boards that weigh about 25 pounds. They then reenter the Atlantic Bounding main and paddle another lap beyond and around the pier.

HONOLULU - Two Hawaii residents completed a grueling journey early Saturday morning, paddling 85 miles daily on Oahu to Kauai-up paddleboards stop.
