Q: I'm prosperous to Florida for a couple of months and I want to prepare my house for the winter, and I pauperism to turn off as many utilities as possible to avoid costs and damage. I pattern to:
• Turn off electrical current to the water heater.
• Turn off the drinking-water supply (from the city) and drain lines, and turn off the refrigerator icemaker.
• Ride off heater, televisions and all clocks and appliances, except the home alarm system.
I've been advised to empty antifreeze in the toilet to prevent any water from freezing.
Do you have any additional opinion for me? I don't have anyone here to allow access to my home while I'm away.
A: Leave the heat on low, around 45 degrees, so the moisture already in the to the heart does not freeze and damage walls or painted surfaces.
I would still winterize the untroubled b in in case of a power outage.
If you have a water-shutoff valve inside the home, make sure it is all the way off. If not, the utility company can turn the water off at the meter. Before shutting off the the best quality, turn off the electrical power or gas supply to the water heater, and then remove the tank by connecting a garden hose to the bottom drain and draining it to a sump concentrate or to the exterior.
