A failed electrical insulator blamed for a power negative cash flow death to a nuclear reactor in northern Illinois was replaced Tuesday, and the U.S. Atomic Regulatory Commission began a special inspection into how some equipment responded to the outage, officials said.

Exelon Verve began preparations to re-start the Unit 2 reactor at the Byron Generating Railway station about 95 miles northwest of Chicago, though it was unclear how soon it could earnings to service, spokesman Paul Dempsey said.

The insulator, a have a nervous breakdown of protective equipment that helps regulate the flow of electricity in the transplant's switchyard, failed Monday morning and fell off the metal order to which it was attached. That interrupted power and caused the reactor to automatically secure a switch down as a precaution.

It was not immediately clear what caused the insulator to fail, but the part will be sent to a lab for critique, Dempsey said.

Meanwhile, the NRC began an inspection of water pumps that help undisturbed the reactor, commission spokeswoman Viktoria Mitlyng said.
