At the application of several clients, local ag consultant Michael
J. Dolle has developed a spread cover showing the amount of
irrigation water they will be able to pump and apply to their
cropland this year and in the tomorrow.
Dolle, a former Texas AgriLife Extension Service agent,
explained that recently-implemented rules from the Lofty Plains
Underground Water Conservation District restricts the amount of
water farmers can bail out to irrigate their crops. It's part of the
district's 50/50 management goal to have 50 percent of the
saturated thickness of the Ogallala Aquifer in 2010 still ready
for use in 2060.
As a result of those pumping restrictions, farmers are being
required to put metering devices on their wells.
"This tabulation is part of the education process, so farmers can more
easily see how much water they will be able to pump," Dolle
explained. "It's powerful for these guys to understand what the
rules mean to them. If they are planning on planting corn and
applying 20 inches of water on the crop, this map out will help them
figure out how many acres they can plant and water, and how long
they can run their pivot systems to use that water.
